Charlie Daniels on Guitar Hero III April 7, 2008

The Charlie Daniels song, “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” is featured in GH3, but Charlie’s not very happy about it. Apparently He did not make that deal (lost rights to the song a while back) and wants parents to know that it’s not his intention to identify himself with the game, which he says has a dark side and is not a very healthy game for kids. It might make more sense if you know that Charlie Daniels has been a Christian for a long time – I remember hearing some of his Christian/Country/Rock songs when I was in high school.

Some folks are being all defensive of their beloved guitar hero franchise, but I think Charlie has a lot of good thoughts posted at his blog. Check it out here or click the picture. I wasn’t aware that you showdown with the devil and I traded in GH3 early on after I noticed some of the same things that Charlie mentions… That was a personal decision I made; I deemed it “not for youth group.”  We moved on to Rock Band which has some content but on the whole is much less heebie-jeebie inducing.

Many of the kids in my youth group play it, and while it may be rated T for Teen; Christian parents may need to sit down and watch a little of the game with their kids and see for themselves.  Most think that it’s harmless.  I traded it in.

I guess Charlie won’t be licensing any images or his band name for a Guitar Hero skin soon will he….

As far as the youth group goes, it seems like a good enough game. Keeping kids out of trouble and all that. They could be playing a lot worse games for sure.

That’s true – there’s a lot worse out there. I try to be really careful with the kiddos though. Rock Band is a much tamer game when it comes to imagery and such (plus its a little easier, y’know, for the kids… lol).

Heh, funny you say that, two of my students (one’s JR high) play that all the time. I could only handle about 15 hours of it myself before I had to clean out my ears and pull the plug… Definitely not youth group friendly that one lol.
