Castle Crashers: Rated T for Teen

Has some silly and cartooney blood and gore (decapitations), gross humor, and some serious kissing.

If you are “of age” and like video games – I can’t think of a better way to spend 15 dollars.  It’s quite simply the most addictive fun I’ve had with an XBLA title ever.  It’s hard to recommend to everyone because of the gore factor – but it’s hard to know how different parents will view it because of it’s exaggerated cartoon graphics.  It’s like playing a Nickelodeon cartoon – only it’s good.

The gameplay is sublime.  Think old-school side scrolling beat-em-up (which I never really got into) meets RPG (which I love).  The level of depth in the game is not immediately apparent so if you’ve played the demo and thought it was at least OK; odds are you will love the game.  There are over 20 unlockable characters that can all be leveled up to 99 (I beat the game at 24 or so).  There are around 20 animal companions to look for throughout the game that give your character stat bonuses.  The game is dripping with style and eye-popping art and hysterical gags.  The variety of levels and bosses was a huge plus.

There are some current problems with the online play (connection issues), but a patch is reportedly on the way. There were some difficulty spikes that forced us to replay earlier levels and level up for particular bosses, but that only happened once or twice.

By far the best part of the game is playing it as a four-player party.  It’s mildly and humorously competitive co-op play is a blast!  I had friends calling me everyday til we beat it to see if it was OK to come over and play the game!  Hack, slash, laugh, level-up, fight over the princesses, revive each other, find new weapons, and laugh some more.  Rock Band 2 who?  We’re playing Castle Crashers!

The Good:

  • Old-school arcade 4-player party game bliss
  • Very addictive – highly replayable
  • Great graphics and humor
  • Great RPG elements

The Bad:

  • Some fussy connection issues

Content:

  • There’s definitely some blood and guts here – parents should try the demo before purchasing for their kids
  • Gross humor may offend (the thieves forest and surrounding areas – watch your step)
